What Does Philoptochos Mean?

The term “Philoptochos” translates to “Friend of the Poor.” It reflects a calling to see Christ in every person and to respond to human need with compassion, dignity and practical assistance.

The Philoptochos Society of Prophet Elias Greek Orthodox Church is composed of faithful and dedicated women who generously offer their time, talents and energy in service to the Church and the wider community.

Supporting Our Church

Providing assistance for parish programs, ministries and activities in cooperation with the Community Priest and Community Council.

Caring for Others

Supporting seniors, families and individuals experiencing hardship, illness, hunger, isolation or other forms of need.

Charitable Fundraising

Raising funds for local and Orthodox charities through community luncheons, bake sales and other philanthropic events.

Our mission

Family, Service and Unity

The Philoptochos Society seeks to preserve the sacredness of the Orthodox community through family, service and unity of action. It upholds the Christian understanding of marriage and the raising of children while promoting the Orthodox Faith and Greek Orthodox traditions in accordance with the doctrines, canons, worship and customs of the Church.

Its philanthropic mission is also advanced through instructional programs, presentations, lectures, seminars and educational resources.

A flexible way to serve

Junior Philoptochos

Junior Philoptochos welcomes younger women and young mothers who wish to help but may have limited time because of family and other commitments. It provides a meaningful and flexible way to participate in charitable service and the life of the parish.
